Poppelvej Zoonotic Spillover Mourvedre
Handpicked on the same day as 'Dead Ohio Sky' from the Paeroa vineyard in McLaren Vale, farmed organically although not certified. Destemmed for a whole berry ferment, the fruit was foot trodden for the first 5 days and then gently hand plunged until dry. The resulting wine was pressed to old puncheons where it remained on gross less for 6 months until bottling. Unfined & unfiltered
Savoury yet smashable is the meassge here.
Winemaker Uffe Deichmann has been tinkering with Mourvedre for a few years now. Up until this point, its all been in the context of crafting his delicious Dead Ohio Sky Rose.
When you think Mataro, you think moody, earthy, dark and serious - this falls in the lighter, fresher frisky end of the red wine pool. We loved it. It's just a shame its so limited. Hopefully he makes a little more in the future.
